THE VENUE: Old Central National Bank Building

219 E. Broad St.
(corner of Broad and 3rd)
entrance on 3rd

Size: huge
Price: FREE

(Please Note: there is some clean up required, but remember that any place that's not a gallery- which we can't afford- is going to have some clean up. So to clean up a place that's FREE, is a lot better than cleaning up a place that's...not free. right?!)

So you've seen the outside... now let me take you on a little tour of the
INSIDE!

These are the doors where everyone will enter...

This is the view from the door way...
(yes, there is some water damage, but it's charming!! And we can remove any hanging pieces that could potentially fall on a patron...)

Inside the indent off to the left...

...are these doors that lead into the space we will be using.

Looking from inside the space back toward the doors.

The same view as above but further to the right.
The space is shaped like a "U", with this being the top left of the letter.

(We will have to move the desks etc. that are in that corner. Apparently someone left that stuff there after using the space for a film shoot.)

Standing in the same spot but looking the other direction.
This would be the top right of the "U".

Same spot as above, but looking straight forward.

Another view of the top right of the "U".

Along the back wall (long arm or the right side of the "U") and in a hallway that goes through the empty middle space of the "U" there are 5 or 6 rooms like the one above that can be used for installations, etc. We are allowed to use the windows to hang work too, either facing out or in.

Some of the rooms have more wall space than windows, such as this one.

This is another doorway leading out of the space. In the "U" shape this is right in the middle, between the two arms.

This is the hallway that those doors lead to.
The hallway leads back to the main entrance way, which is behind my back as I'm taking the picture.

This is the room that is opposite the large room we will be using. Although beautiful, there really isn't enough wall space for us to use. But it's nice to look at!

There is a kitchen attached to the room we're using,
but... the space does not have running water.
So that means no bathrooms, either.
I have spoken with Paul about this and he seemed to think that it would be fine, that people wouldn't expect it in a place like this.

I'm sorry if all my "U" descriptions are confusing. We are going to try and plan a day soon where everyone can come down and see the space. I'm trying to figure out when would be the best time to do this. Would a Fri or Sat morning work for everyone? We need to get started on the planning and cleaning soon! I will make a floor plan to bring when we all go there so that we can start planning who's work will go where.

Also, we have been approached by the MFA Painting and Printing candidates who would like to hold their thesis show in the building at the same time. There are some other smaller rooms that we could let them use. While I think it could bring more exposure to our show, I am a bit concerned about the logistics of it. Trying to equally share the cost and labor of cleaning up the common areas will be difficult. Not to mention publicity, etc. It is obviously not up to me to make the decision, so what does everyone else think?

Thanks guys! I'm really excited about the space and you should be too!!

  1. I think we should share...it will bring in more people. Once we decide what rooms we want to use, they can have whatever we don't use. Since we are located a little further up, it'll be nice to bring in more people dedicated to the painting dept. If you're worried about that they can give us half the cost of renovation (maybe more if we are the only ones to do the labor). That is something that can be discussed and drawn up together. MFA = Professionals coming to see our work. I'm down...

  2. I don't think we should share because then it would take the focus off of our show. It is their masters thesis... Then it would be painting vs photo. I don't think its a goood idea. I talked to that guy and they have no money as well. We already have a large amount of people that we are working with. If we add a different dept we are responsible for their actions as well. I think they should show somewhere else.

  3. I agree with sarah, but I have similar concerns as cassie. I do feel though, that as long as we can treat it as two different shows (different insurance documents, different areas of the building, we only work on our part, they only work on theirs, etc) it might be possible. As far as the painting vs photo thing goes- sorry, but I think that is kind of irrational. Galleries and museums present photography and paining side by side in many cases and there is never a problem there. And we would have completely separate areas, this place is massive!!! Again, we would just have to figure out how to make it two SEPARATE shows. there is still a lot to work out...

  4. Why make it any more difficult than it is? He said they have no budget for their show. That is a bit problematic I think. I was thinking it was an issue liability wise.

As far as the painting vs photo thing goes... It is their MFA show and our Senior show. I think it has a possibility of conflicting with our work is all.

If they have their own area and do all the work themselves that is fine. I barely have time as it is. We are already working with a massive class to make sure everything comes together.

  5. I think these are all good discussions that should be had by the whole class. I see both sides.

  6. The Admin. Panel is going to set up time to go to the Venue. We will check out the space and make a group decision keeping in mind everyone's comments and concerns of the shows outcome. We will see the venue next week sometime. Send all concerns and comments to the administrator responsible for your panel. If you don't know who it is, then... You should probably start this semester all over because of lacking in participation. ha.
